Get Festive On A Budget

"One of the biggest things you can do to decorate on a budget for fall or winter is to pick a neutral color palette instead of rust, gold, orange, blue or silver decor for the seasons," says

Jen Stark, founder of HappyDIYHome.com, a gardening and home improvement blog.

She says the neutral color decor works year-round: "Get neutral placemats, wood chargers, napkins and cream candles for a centerpiece that you can bring out for virtually any holiday."

*Outdoor Inspiration

It's easy to add affordable, seasonal touches inside and outside your home. Instead of buying fall and winter decorations, Stark suggests relying on nature for them. That means going into the woods to pick up items such as pinecones for a centerpiece. You can also place gourds and pumpkins throughout your home as decor.

Phillip Ash, the founder of ProPaintCorner.com, also suggests going outdoors to collect sticks of varying sizes.

"Thinner sticks can be used to create original and exciting vase decorations, including a great place to hang ornaments," he says. "Longer and thicker sticks or branches are great for outside to create architecturally exciting shapes and as a stand for Christmas lights."

Next, showcase nature at your entryway.

"In Canada, we decorate our porches and entertainment areas with natural materials like leaves, pumpkins, wreaths and twigs," says Jeanine Duval, co-founder and editor-in-chief of edelwyn.com, a lifestyle website. "You can add some torches or solar LED lights for less than $20 to turn your porch or dinner table into a unique focal point."

*Seasonal Swaps

Professional organizer and cleaning expert Michelle Hansen, owner of PracticalPerfectionut.com, also starts off with basic neutral pieces.

Her bedroom showcases a white comforter that she accents seasonally by swapping in different pillowcases on her everyday pillows such as a buffalo check pattern for Christmas. Whenever possible, she uses seasonal pillow covers for throw pillows instead of buying new throw pillows. She also uses some accent pillows such as a seasonal velvet one for added holiday flair.

"If you're decorating your bedroom for Christmas, it is significantly cheaper to decorate if you only have to buy a few new pillows and a throw versus purchasing a new bedding set," says Hansen.

She also incorporates some green garland for a seasonal touch with lots of texture. She suggests splurging on a holiday sign. Her room features a sign that says "Silent Night." Find these signs at discount retailers like Home Goods or T.J. Maxx.

*Budget Holiday Decor

"Ribbon and spray paint go a long way," says Ash, who advises not going overboard with a typical red and green Christmas palette.

Instead, for fall, choose natural colors like orange, red, brown and maybe a metallic gold. In winter, go for icy blue, white and silver.

Other budget-friendly swaps from season to season include simple wreaths, which can be embellished for different celebrations; scented, colorful seasonal candles; scattered rustic baskets stuffed with seasonal elements like garland or pinecones; and cozy throw blankets featuring different fabrics, textures and seasonal patterns. Visit a craft or dollar store for inexpensive decorations such as easy-to-assemble paper garland or pom poms.

*Plan Ahead

Get affordable decorating inspiration on websites like Pinterest and Instagram. You can often learn how to repurpose items you already have.

Once the fall and Christmas seasons are over, stock up on goodies for next year at postseason sales. You'll often get great deals with discounts up to 50% or 75% off.

Shopping thrift stores year-round can lead to seasonal finds at a fraction of the cost. "Tons of decor gets rehomed every year as people's tastes change," says Ash. "You never know what treasure you might pick up."
