Around The Table

Get your home ready for fall and winter celebrations, with a focus on making your dining room a seasonal standout.

*Natural

This year's color palette is natural and neutral.

"I think we're going to continue seeing natural colors with an infusion of browns, greens and yellows in the home," says certified interior designer Aaron Lebowski, who's a consultant at home design website JulieiSalone.com.

He says to look for natural stone, terra cotta, marble and travertine for countertops, flooring and end tables.

*Table Decor

Let your dinner table tell a seasonal story. It's often easiest to start with monochromatic dishes, such as white, and then layer in pops of color or print. For example, clusters of mini pumpkins and gourds can bring a festive look to a fall table.

Mix and match place settings or add in vintage pieces for an interesting style. Layer different plates for added interest, too. Use a bold tablecloth, such as plaid, to give visual oomph.

Candles can help keep your dining area inviting, intimate and cozy. Mix in white or colored tapers, votives and tea lights with fall and winter touches such as apples, wheat, pinecones, pine branches, eucalyptus or flowers for a charming tablescape.

Consider your food to be decorative as well. For example, a charcuterie board featuring seasonal snacks such as nuts, cheeses, crackers and cranberries on a stylish plate will be practical and pretty.

*Statement Lights

Add a pop of color with lights.

"Neon lighting in the home is fast becoming the hottest interior design trend because of its multifunctionality and eye-catching glow," says Courtney Stables, who works for Custom Neon.

She says a bright neon sign in the dining room can be the center of attention at all of your fall and winter gatherings. "It's the perfect piece of staple decor to complement any decor style and any seasonal or holiday decor," she says.

The right lights can both set the mood and make a statement. Scandinavian-style pendant lights are a top style this year, according to Mitchell Elworthy, the founder and director of The Lighting Outlet, an Australian company that imports to the U.S.

"They're versatile, elegant, eye-catching and available in a huge range of styles, colors, shapes, finishes, and prices," he says. "Unlike lights that sit flush against the ceiling in your dining area, pendant lighting is made to stand out, making it the perfect choice for homeowners and business owners who like to keep their lighting interesting."

Add lanterns to a table or near the fireplace. Use string lights for whimsy and to create a sense of warmth.

*Go Green

Volodymyr Barabakh, co-founder and project director of building contractors Structural Beam, says fall is the time to focus on greenery inside.

"Houseplants have been growing rapidly in popularity, and this autumn we will see people go all out with this trend," he says. "Think large statement plants or multiple smaller ones to bring accents of life to each room. Different shades of greenery suit neutral decors as well as more vibrant styles, so anyone can get involved."

*Seasonal Accents

Texture is big, too. Style your space with elements that look and feel interesting. For example, add tall grasses to a vase, choose a velvet table runner and toss some soft throw pillows onto your dining chairs. Hang seasonal wreaths featuring leaves, branches, berries and bows in autumnal or winter colors or patterns.

Best of all, most of these decor touches are easy to find and available in a variety of budgets.

No matter how you showcase your style this season, your table will be a place for nourishment and fun.
