Season's Screenings

It wouldn't be Christmas if you didn't watch a favorite holiday movie. Or two. Or more. Sometimes, your favorite Christmas flicks are on repeat!

According to data from the website Preply, a language learning site that mapped popular Christmas movies, American's favorite Christmas movies are "Home Alone," "The Grinch" (2018 version) and "Elf," in that order. "Home Alone" is also the top Christmas movie in Canada.

Other fav holiday movies in the U.S. include "Love Actually," "It's a Wonderful Life," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "The Polar Express," "Frosty the Snowman" and more.

*Memorable Experience

Now that you know which flicks to watch, plan a movie-watching get-together complete with a theme and snacks.

"Hosting a holiday party is always a memorable experience, so plan it right," says Lilian Chen, co-founder and COO of Bar None Games, who suggests using a movie screen -- indoors for cooler weather, outdoors for warmer weather.

Next, she suggests dressing your home for the holiday, including strings of lights, wrapped gifts and candles.

Chen suggests serving holiday cookies, a popcorn bar, an assortment of nuts and lots of drinks, including water, soft drinks, juices and hot cocoa.

*Get Snacking

Richard Clews, founder of a menswear brand and a father of three, loves throwing themed parties with his wife.

They especially like to watch "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

"This movie is a classic and one that my family and I watch together every year," he says.

Clews recommends serving appetizers for your movie foods, including a Christmas tree pull-apart cheese bread with marinara sauce, as well as a reindeer chow snack mix, featuring Chex cereal, pretzel twists, melted chocolate, peanut butter, holiday sprinkles, red and green M&Ms, and confectioners' sugar.

Mix up fun alcoholic (and nonalcoholic) drinks, too. Consider Uncle Eddie's love of eggnog and whip up your own boozy eggnog featuring rum and bourbon.

Hot cocoa is a traditional and timeless winter drink, perfect for pairing with cookies and other sweet treats.

*Movie Night Food Ideas

You can make your movie night a potluck, too. Ask guests to make or buy seasonal or movie-inspired dishes. Here are some other Christmas movie-inspired foods:

"Elf": Remember when Buddy in "Elf" has breakfast spaghetti, complete with Pop-Tarts, marshmallows, syrup and other unconventional toppings? Serve your own spaghetti bar so guests can add their own toppings. Think meatballs or sausage, grated cheese and a few types of sauce. Serve up garlic bread and salad as sides.

"Home Alone": Keep things classic when watching "Home Alone" and order up some pizza and sip Pepsi like the McCallister family. For dessert, indulge your sweet tooth like when Kevin McCallister ate a three-scoop sundae in his room at the Plaza Hotel in "Home Alone 2."

"The Grinch": Break out your green food coloring! Whip up green-hued cookies and punch, and then add some hearty dishes to your table, including Whoville favs like Who-hash and roast beast, aka roast beef.

*Plan ahead

Keep the party theme light and fun. For example, have a photo booth with Christmas and movie-themed props; host an "ugly sweater" contest; play a festive holiday song playlist and sing seasonal karaoke. Don't forget prizes for the best ugly sweater and the best singing.

Plan some activities, too, like a cookie-decorating station, or ask guests to assemble mini gingerbread houses. Send guests home with some goodies, too, like candy or homemade baked goods, as a thank you for attending your party.

No matter the Christmas movie you choose to watch, plan ahead for the viewing.

"Take time for preparation, and your place will be the talk of the town this holiday season," says Chen.
