Whether it's covered with morning dew or providing resting places for fireflies at night, there's nothing that evokes good memories like stepping out on lush green grass. However, if your lawn just isn't there quite yet, experts say spring and late fall are the best times to plant the best seed, depending on where you are planting.
Robert Martinez, a lawn expert at Yardenz, says, "When selecting a grass seed, it is important to consider your climate, soil type, and the amount of sun your lawn receives. Different varieties of grass thrive in different climates, so make sure to select one that will do well in your area. You will also need to consider the amount of maintenance you're willing to do as some types require more frequent mowing than others."
Stacie Krljanovic, a head groundskeeper in Texas, says, "A grass zone map is an essential tool for any lawn enthusiast, as it helps you determine which types of grass will thrive in your specific climate. To plant the right seed at the right time, first consult your grass zone map, and then choose a seed variety that is suited for your climate."
Martinez says using the grass zone map is easy. "First identify your location. You can do this by looking up your ZIP code or using an online mapping service," he says. "Once you have identified your location, look on the map for the corresponding grass zone."
Bryan Tan, of Gardeners Grail, says grass zone maps are also useful for identifying grasses that are resistant to certain types or pests or diseases. "The maps are usually divided into different zones, each of which is identified by a color. The colors signify the types of grasses that should be planted in the area. For example, a green zone indicates an area that is suitable for cool season grasses, while a red zone indicates an area best suited for warm-season grasses."
Martinez gives a few examples. "Warm-season grasses like Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass should be planted in late spring when temperatures are warmer," he says. "Generally, cool-season grasses like ryegrass and fescue should be planted in late summer or early fall when temperatures are cooler and there is more moisture in the soil."
Tan agrees that the most important aspect of planting grass seeds is understanding the climate and soil conditions of your area. "You can find the best type of grass seeds for your region by consulting your local nursery or gardening store," he says. "Planting grass seed in the early spring or late fall is ideal as the temperatures are cooler and the environment is more conducive to germination."
Tan emphasizes that soil preparation is also important for successful planting. "Loosening the soil and adding organic matter can help the grass to take root and thrive," he says. "Be sure to follow the seed package instructions for planting and watering."
"After you plant, keep an eye on the weather forecast and water the seed if necessary, to keep the soil moist until the seed germinates," Krljanovic says. "Mow the grass when it reaches the recommended height and fertilize it regularly to keep it healthy and lush."
Establishing beautiful grasses requires work and diligent care, but the proper planting, maintenance, mowing and nutrition all lead to that gorgeous lawn that your neighbors will envy and your family members will associate with happy memories year after year.
