Refreshing a room in your home can be as simple as changing out a faucet, replacing drawer pulls, switching out light fixtures or even just moving items you already have from room to room.
Home thrifting influencer Jena Von Teese in Idaho says, "For so little money and very little expertise needed, you can take charge of those little accents and transformative color pops that can give your bathroom an entirely different look and feel. What once was a basic, minimalist bathroom or powder room can be 'painted' or 'accessorized' according to your imagination. You may be a minimalist still, or go wild with a bolder design of unexpected fixture pieces, and the room becomes something so pleasing. A well-designed bathroom delivers the relaxation and indulgence that soothes your soul."
Whether you wish to have a DIY bathroom fixture refresh or bring in the expertise, vision and knowledge of an interior design pro, here are some top trends in bathroom fixtures and embellishments perfect to take on as the months turn warmer.
"My favorite combinations for bathrooms always include traditional elements with a fresh twist," says designer Cory Connor of Cory Connor Designs in New Jersey. "For instance, in a bathroom, classic built-in cabinetry feels way more modern when finished in the perfect shade of blue. You can then build your fixture color, shine and design off the impact of the biggest feature in the room."
As bathroom style shifts away from all white to more color, colors in metal elements can provide the perfect pop of color coordinating throughout the bathroom. Von Teese says to look for larger numbers of interesting, classic, colorful or metallic fixtures and accessories like drawer pulls and use them as a coordinated detail in each of your bathrooms. "It might be all the bathrooms on the first floor, or all the bathrooms affixed to the bedrooms. That one shining element of a faucet or knobs brings those spaces together in a minute. And thrift shops could put a few hundred dollars of fixtures and accessories in your hand for just a few dollars," she says.
Von Teese's thrifted home focus hooks into one of the top bathroom design trends: an uncompromising adoption of sustainability and waste reduction in your refresh or redesign plans.
Design and construction industries present many options in fixture design, especially in finishes. Your first decision will be to replace any out-of-date and inefficient fixtures. In making the decision to swap out outdated items, you get to decide how you want your bathroom space to feel.
Decluttering helps open the space, but it's that switch to, say, gold-finished fixtures that can add drama. Gold is, in fact, one of the most popular finishes right now, as pairing gold fixtures and finishes with an on-trend color like navy blue or a vibrant turmeric shade creates spaces with entirely different feels and purposes, such as to calm yourself or to boost your energy.
Look out also for matte finishes like black, another turn toward use of color in your bathroom oasis. Replacing a tired chrome faucet with a two-handled faucet in brushed nickel can bring the wow factor that is subtle enough to blend in with other finishes. "Plus, brushed nickel can be more forgiving of water spots, which may take the stress out of your idyllic environment," says Connor.
Sinks and bathtubs are a great place to start since faucets and fixtures offer many functional aspects as well as appearance-based thrills. A two-handled showerhead for the bath creates use options. "You'll bring the eye up to the finish," says Von Teese. Fixtures will likely feature water-saving technology as an inspired function, of which the presence can add to your room's spa feel. When you know your space is working for good, you may be able to exhale, lower those shoulders and unwind.
And don't forget lighting fixtures. They may coordinate in color, material and tone of the bathroom's fixtures, or flatter via contrast and unexpected pairings and patterns. Connor says that she thinks of lighting fixtures as jewelry, always prettying up the place and added elements of surprise with expected embellishments. Von Teese concurs, saying that switching up and changing out accessories like lamps and light effects highlights the magic of your fixtures and your bathroom's style.
Start small, with just a project or two in mind, or go for an entire room refresh. In these days of appreciating our homes more, a bathroom fixture refresh is a satisfying plunge.
