Suite Heart

Your primary bedroom is the place to relax, sleep and enjoy your personal space. Typically, it is the largest bedroom in the home. If you're lucky, the adjoining suite includes a bathroom; walk-in closet; and extra room, such as a lounge or sitting area or a space to exercise.

Keely Smith, lead interior designer at JD Elite interiors in North Vancouver, calls a primary bedroom "a space where you can relax and unwind, away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home."

This is your getaway at home, so make it your own. "Incorporate personal touches such as photos, artwork, and other memorabilia to make the room unique," says John Linden, an interior designer in Los Angeles, noting that a few decorative pieces can bring the whole room together.

*Things To Avoid

When personalizing your primary bedroom, one of the biggest things to avoid is overwhelming the space. "Don't overcrowd the room with too many pieces of furniture," advises Linden, who advises considering the room's size, style and functionality when choosing furniture and other elements for the suite.

Peyton Robinson, interior designer and the head of marketing at Foter, a home design and decor platform, suggests not trying to do too many different things in the suite. "Stick to one style and ideally only opt for one statement piece," she says. "This could be in the headboard of your bed or lounge area, but avoid over decorating your space as this should be a simple and relaxing area where you sleep."

*Bedroom

Your bedroom should be cozy, so invest in a comfortable and supportive mattress and pillows, as well as luxurious and warm sheets and blankets in soft fabrics such as silk, velvet and cotton.

Consider creating a focal point for the bedroom with an accent wall. An interesting wallpaper can add a little color and a lot of texture to the walls. "We like to highlight the room by papering or doing a decorative treatment on the wall behind the bed," says Pamela O'Brien, principal designer at Pamela Hope Designs in Texas.

She suggests adding a pair of nightstands with lamps on top to provide function and balance in the room. Placing a bench or chairs at the foot of the bed adds charm and is functional for putting on shoes.

Personalize your lighting, too; you can use overhead lighting or lamps or both. Next, add in some plants. "Greenery will bring life to the room and provide a calming atmosphere," says Linden.

*Decor

You don't have to have a bold color scheme to make a statement. Smith recommends neutral colors such as whites, grays and beiges, noting that these light colors help create a sense of calm and relaxation. It also allows other design elements to make a statement.

O'Brien agrees, explaining, "Monochromatic hues with a pop of color in the art and pillows is appealing."

When it comes to flooring, she says wood floors are the popular choice. While the wood can be a cold surface, you can warm the space with area rugs. Best of all, the area rugs can be moved or swapped out as needed. That's a much easier change than replacing wall-to-wall carpeting.

*Bathroom

An en suite bathroom can only be accessed through the primary bedroom, so it's perfectly private. Make sure the room has extra privacy with window coverings such as blinds or shades.

Smith says the suite's bathroom should be a "spa-like retreat." Make sure you have luxurious elements such as towels, bath products and robes. Ideally, the bathroom should have storage for all of these amenities and more.

*Closet

For the closet, personalize the space by creating storage that meets your needs. For example, have shoe cubbies or clear boxes for all of your shoes. Hang accessories such as necklaces and belts from wall hooks. Install shelving, hanging rods and dressers to store clothes.

Be sure to add lighting, so you can see everything in your closet. Robinson recommends adding a sitting area or chair, too. It'll be a comfortable place to sit while you organize, pick out your clothing and get ready for the day.

No matter how you personalize your primary bedroom, know that it doesn't have to be done all at once. Add new elements over time or change things up so the space continues to feel perfect for you.
