Changing the lighting features in a room can be a quick, easy and inexpensive way to change the look and feel of the space. In one day, or in one weekend, without painting or doing any heavy lifting, you can DIY or hire a handyman to install fresh, new lights. Go subtle with simple, plug-in tabletop lights or get those overhead pendant lamps you've been eyeing online.
It's inspiring as a goal, but just what is on-trend now in lights? It's quicker to name what's fallen out of favor: Edison lights and glowing filament lights. That trend has had a lengthy run, but now homeowners are moving away from the look of yesteryear to a fresh, new style with LED lights and energy efficiency in mind. "Keep in mind that Edison lights do still make for a great look, especially in outside seating areas," says interior designer Shaye Taylor of Chatham, New Jersey. "And if you're looking for budget options, Edison lights might be on sale right now as trends shift, and those bulbs are more affordable... yet still new to you. So, it does make for a room refresh!"
What tops the list for new lighting looks? Taylor lists the following styles:
*Pendant lighting
Pendant lighting first came into favor as the fixture of choice hanging above kitchen islands, in modern styles, rustic and farmhouse looks. Now, pendant lamps arrive in decorative styles like glass pendants, in color, in wave layouts instead of in straight lines, translucent colors and metallic-finish accents. "For a minimalist look, pendant lights can be the only lights in the room, or you can pair pendants with a beautifully coordinating chandelier," says Taylor. "Just have one be the statement piece and the other type more subtle."
Think of other home spaces for pendant lights, like a sunroom, library or reading space, your bathroom, kids' rooms, foyers and stairwells. "Open the possibilities to add visual interest to a plain or small space," says Taylor.
*Chandeliers
With chandeliers, go big. Statement chandeliers, again, provide lots of visual interest and allow you to make the most of design elements like crystals and glass. "When the chandelier provides the 'wow factor,' you don't have to provide much else for visual effect and in fact can take some smaller lighting and decor pieces away to modernize the space," says Taylor.
*Layered looks
Think backlit mirrors and frames for layered light that again can build that 'wow factor' look in spotlight spaces.
*Table lamps
Choose new, shop at vintage stores or secondhand shops, or DIY lamps with a fresh coat of paint. You can also simply buy new lampshades to again create a fresh, new look for the room. "Group coordinating table lamps for the statement look of a chandelier, except much easier on the budget and no need to hire an electrician," Taylor says.
*Outside lighting
As outdoor spots give us more living and entertaining space, such as in an outdoor bar or dining area, let that space give you the freedom to accessorize it with pendant lights, a chandelier, string lights and tabletop lighting to make your space glow and your events stand out. "If you have a fireplace outside, carry the lighting effect out to the sitting spaces with battery-operated effect lights, such as flameless candles and, yes, those Edison lights you've always wanted.
