Gift registries have evolved. Later marriages, second marriages and couples who just aren't into collecting household stuff are registering for much more than Instant Pots. Here are ideas for money, experiences, subscriptions and date nights, beginning with a foolproof option: Cash.

"Cash registries are a great option," says Jessica Bishop, founder of the Budget Savvy Bride, to U.S. News. "It's flexible for the wedding couple and it's flexible for their guests." To make cash gifts easy to give, give guests a link to an easy cash-transfer app such as Venmo or PayPal. There are also websites that can make it easier such as With Joy, Zola, Honeyfund, My Registry and The Knot, according to Beth Braverman, writing for U.S. News. Guests shouldn't just put cash in an envelope, though. To avoid handling fees and make sure the gift doesn't get lost, write a check and enclose a personal note saying what it's for in the envelope.

The average cash gift is $100, whether you're planning to attend the wedding or not, according to Braverman. Another idea is to fit your gift to your own budget, not the couple's; as a guide, give them four times as much as what you would spend on dinner out, president of etiquette consulting company Mannersmith Jodi R.R. Smith told Braverman.

To say thank you for this boost to the honeymoon or house fund, couples should send a handwritten note, as always.

*Other Fun Ideas

"Many couples already live together and have most everyday items, and traditional registries are now uncommon," says Kristin Sullivan, master wedding director of The Bridal Retreat to the website Brides. Instead, she says, you can give them the gift of an experience. Try picking up tickets to their favorite local event, or even one that would be brand new for them.

Derby Mayne, a writer for home website The Spruce, lists some gifts that are especially good for couples celebrating their second marriage. These include such items as couples cooking, dance or golf lessons; a month or more of housecleaning or landscaping services; and a monthly subscription box for something the couple would enjoy, like wine, chocolate or fruit.

Are there children from a previous marriage? Mayne also suggests a gift card for dinner out at a family-friendly restaurant, tickets to a theme park or a gift basket filled with foods and family activities such as movies, music and snacks."

*Inspiration To Keep Showing Up for the Relationship

Show your fun side and faith in the couple's partnership with a basket of date night ideas and items. Diane Hall at The Knot lists ideas for seasonal date nights, at-home plans, inexpensive activities and more.

But if you really want something that's sure to be a hit? The big winner these days used to be gauche, but now it's great, according to sources across the web. Make your gift money, and let the couple make the memory.
